Six Elements in Motion

A live generative workshop with Morgan Talty on what happens when voice, point of view, character, plot, setting and specificity, and theme stop sitting beside one another and begin working together.

The method

Story is not a pile of techniques. It is a living relation.

The workshop isolates parts of a story, puts them under pressure, and brings them back together without reducing fiction to a formula.

What happens

Three movements. One productive collision.

  1. Character without setting.

Create two characters who want the same thing without leaning on place to create interest.

  2. Setting without character.

Build a place through specificity, pressure, object, sound, texture, and scale.

  3. The merge.

Bring the characters and place together, then revise what no longer makes sense.

What you leave with

New material and a next question worth testing.

A story seed

A draft fragment generated during the session.

A craft map

A sense of which element is carrying the most pressure.

A reusable exercise

A three-part sequence you can return to in later work.

A revision question

One practical test for continuing the piece.
